Chris Rushing: Floor Pass Digital Design and Illustration

Chris Rushing has one of those rare portfolios that includes excellent work across disciplines, from illustration to digital design. In particular, his design for the Floor Pass app caught my eye. The app was created for the 2012 DNC and RNC, to give CNN and Time Magazine more of a physical presence at the conventions. The app included all sorts of interactive features, including breaking news, a speech library for all of the speakers, a scheduling guide, maps, Time Magazine cover of the day, and my (and Chris’s) favorite part, individually designed state badges for users to collect and trade. In the end, Chris worked with Carnival Labs to bring his art direction, illustration and design to life across all platforms.

Word Animals are unique typographical designs best described as images of animals created using the letters in their name. The identity is comprised of a hand written mark and a broad colour palette that matches the visual style of the “word animals” designs. Designed by Manchester based designer Dan Fleming, these beautifully drawn designs bond together animal structure and typographic structure and present a complete and professional final outcome.

“Translate a unique brand name and chef personality into a cohesive brand. Find packaging solutions that are organic and affordable, yet versatile enough to cover a broad range of product. Execution - Created simple logo type, supplemented with series of stamps and stickers. Decorated standard boxes to create a feel unique to the brand. Photographed the chef, product, and kitchen environment.”

We create. We bring things to life. There is necessary risk involved in such heady business. The result is invariably difficult to predict, to determine whether lightening will strike and life will be breathed. This isn’t to say there is no method to the madness, but instead that we allow brands to take shape on their own rather than imposing our ideas on them.
